On January 9, 2007, the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs officially introduced the first iPhone. The birth of the iPhone revolutionized the modern smartphone industry. However, in the first version, Apple’s iPhone still has many limitations in features. Compared to the latest generation of iPhone today, it is really a heaven.

To celebrate the iPhone’s 15th birthday, let’s review 15 features that were absent from the first-generation iPhone model.

App Store: The first iPhone launched with pre-installed apps like Phone, Weather, Notes, Calendar, Photos, and Calculator. There was no way to install third-party software until the App Store appeared in July 2008. Developers can offer web-based apps, but the experience isn’t what it is now.

Copy and paste: This is hard to believe, but the ability to copy and paste characters was only added to the 2009 iPhone.

Front camera: While selfie is a buzzword these days, the original iPhone didn’t have a front-facing camera. It wasn’t until the 2010 iPhone 4 that the device had a front-facing camera for FaceTime video calling.

Film: The original iPhone could only take photos, the movie recording feature was present on the 2009 iPhone 3GS.

Flashlight: Since there was no LED flash on the first generation iPhone, it did not have a flashlight. When the App Store was released, a number of flashlight applications were used to push the screen brightness to the highest level to replace the flashlight.

Picture Messaging (MMS): iPhone 2007 only supports text messaging (SMS), cannot send photos. The MMS feature was introduced on iPhone OS 3.0 in 2009 but only for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

GPS: Although the original iPhone had the Google Maps application pre-installed, it did not have detailed directions because the device did not have GPS. The new iPhone 3G 2008 has this feature.

Background image: Users have to wait until iOS 4 in 2010 to be able to install phone wallpapers, but early iPhones are not supported.

Verizon: AT&T is the exclusive carrier for iPhone distribution in the US. Verizon only joined in 2011.

Siri: Apple’s voice assistant debuted with the 2011 iPhone 4S.

Touch ID / Face ID: Modern iPhones are equipped with biometric identification systems such as Face ID or Touch ID, but this is a luxury with the 2007 iPhone. Users can only lock/unlock the device with a 4-digit password. Touch ID was introduced on the iPhone 5S in 2013, and Face ID on the iPhone X in 2017.

Lightning connection: Like many iPods before it, the first iPhone used a 30-pin charging port. Apple switched to the Lightning port with the iPhone 5 in 2012.

Retina display: Introduced with the 2010 iPhone 4, the Retina display had four times as many pixels as the 2007 iPhone and was the sharpest smartphone display at the time.

Wireless charging: The first iPhone models to support wireless charging were the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X in 2017.

Waterproof: The 2007 iPhone is not waterproof, but the latest models are IP68 water resistant.
