AMD’s popular “Van Gogh” APU series is said to have a series of significant improvements compared to its predecessors, with the presence of a graphics core based on proprietary RDNA 2 technology, DDR5 memory. /LPDDR5, and possibly a whole new audio processing system.
According to a report from Phoronix, AMD has released a total of 12 Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) driver-specific patches to bring this technology to the upcoming Van Gogh APU. The patches show that Van Gogh is set to equip AMD’s new audio coprocessor – ACP 5.x – with 2 I2S interfaces/controllers. Since no mention of ACP 5.x has been revealed before, it seems likely that the Van Gogh APU will be the first AMD platform to support this new proprietary audio technology (at least on Linux). ).
Currently, there is very little information about AMD’s ACP on the Internet. The only thing that can be found so far is that AMD’s Raven Ridge APUs from 2017 are based on ACP3x, so perhaps AMD’s contemporary APUs will own ACP4x. Because of the small amount of information, it is not clear how ACP 5.x will bring about specific improvements (e.g. hardware decoding for Dolby Atmos or DTS:X streams?). But one thing can be said that there will be a series of positive changes.
AMD’s Van Gogh is truly one of the company’s most “mysterious” APUs ever. The processor is rumored to feature 2 Zen cores, an RDNA 2 based graphics processor, and memory drivers to better support DDR5 and/or LPDDR5 RAM. In addition, the chip is expected to be manufactured using one of TSMC’s high-end 7nm lines. This explains why AMD opted for a combination of the relatively compact Zen 2 core and the high-performance RDNA 2 GPU.
Architecturally, Van Gogh will share many similarities with the custom SoCs found in the Microsoft Xbox Series X|S and Sony PlayStation 5 consoles. However, the exact configuration is still unknown. by Van Gogh, it is difficult to tell whether this is an APU model specifically for gamers.
AMD usually doesn’t comment on unreleased products, so basically everything we know about Van Gogh comes from Linux patches and rumours.
