(CHK) Apple’s latest patent reveals fascinating technology that the company will use to waterproof new headphones.

Today, the United States Patent and Trademark Office announced Apple’s patent application for an advanced ultrasonic touch sensor. According to Patently Apple, the ultrasonic technology patent will apply to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

The traditional capacitive touch sensor used on AirPods can fail when the headphones are wet, sweaty, or when gloves are used. Ultrasonic technology could make future AirPods Pro and AirPods Max easier to use when wet or when wearing gloves.

Also, unlike capacitive touch systems, in some ultrasonic induction systems the sensors/electrodes can be located far away from the sensing area and long range touch sensing can be achieved. .

Certainly Apple’s patent includes “ultrasonic induction capabilities” that could be used in future AirPods models.

In addition, ultrasonic technology can improve the touch accuracy of AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Since this is a patent application, it is unknown when or if an Apple product using this technology will hit the market.

However, this ultrasonic touch technology shows that Apple may soon put it on headset devices in the near future. Other devices such as phones, tablets or macbooks can benefit from this new technology such as having an in-display fingerprint sensor – something Apple has not yet done.
