Ethereum has scheduled its next major upgrade, Arrow Glacier, scheduled for December 8th.

Ethereum will conduct a hard fork delaying the “difficulty bomb” in early December

Arrow Glacier will be the third major upgrade of Ethereum’s Proof-of-Work chain in 2021, following Berlin in April and London in August. This upgrade will be done through a hard fork, which requires all All components on the network must migrate to a newer version to avoid a blockchain split.

Just last week, on October 27, Ethereum successfully performed another major upgrade, Altair. It should be noted, however, that this is an upgrade to Ethereum’s Proof-of-Stake chain, which will later be merged with the Proof-of-Work chain to bring Ethereum into a whole new stage of development.

According to ETH developers, Arrow Glacier will be activated at block number 13,773.00, scheduled to be mined on December 8, 2021.

Essentially, the upcoming upgrade can be seen as a repeat of the hard fork Muir Glacier done in January 2020, so the two names are almost identical.

Specifically, the only proposal included in Arrow Glacier would be EIP-4345, whereby delay “difficulty bomb” of Ethereum adds 10.7 million blocks. The difficulty bomb is a mechanism that increases the difficulty of mining ETH over time, forcing miners to no longer profit from this activity and switch to Proof-of-Stake transaction validation. This is one of the important tools in ETH’s Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake blockchain transition.

The ETH developers expect that with this delay, the difficulty bomb will only be activated around Q2/2022, by which time Ethereum will probably have prepared what it needs to proceed with the consolidation process.

Arrow Glacier will be the 5th difficulty bomb delay in Ethereum’s history, as the project’s Proof-of-Stake move continues to take longer than originally planned.
