Creating live captions (Live Captions) is an extremely useful feature in Microsoft Teams, but not many people know about it. For example, you need to conduct a video conference with a foreign colleague, but your English listening is not really good. Then, automatic subtitles with high accuracy will be your lifeline.
How to enable and use the Live Captions feature in Microsoft Teams. At the present time (July 2021), Live Captions only support English (US). However, Microsoft is also planning to add support for more languages in the near future.
Enable or disable Live Captions in the Microsoft Teams app
The Microsoft Teams PC app now offers an option to enable Live Captions located inside the system settings menu, and can only be used while calls are in progress.
First, during an ongoing voice or video call, you click the three-dot icon “More Actions” at the top of the call window, as shown below.
In the menu that appears, select the option “Turn on Live Captions“.
You will receive a confirmation message stating that the language for the live captions is set to English (US).
You will then see the auto-generated subtitles appear in the lower part of the call window.
To disable Live Captions, click the three-dot icon again at the top of the call window. Then click select “Turn off live captions“.
Hide your name in Live Captions.
By default, the Live Captions feature identifies and displays the speaker’s name before each caption. This helps you know who is talking about what. However, if you don’t want the Teams app to recognize you, you can turn it off.
Open the Microsoft Teams app and click the three-dot icon to open the system menu.
Click select “Settings“.
Click on the item “Captions and Transcripts” on the left side and turn off the switch next to the option “Automatically identify me in the meeting and transcripts“.
Press Esc to close the Settings window.
That’s all you need to do to use the Live Captions feature. Hope you are succesful.
