Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch a series of new SUV models for the Indian market. This year, the automaker will launch the new Brezza and an all-new mid-size SUV model codenamed Maruti Suzuki YFG. In addition, MSIL is preparing to launch a Coupe SUV with the code name YTB and a 5-door Jimny model. Maruti Suzuki is also said to be developing an all-new seven-seater SUV to compete with the likes of Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700.
In fact, Suzuki and Toyota JV are also working on a new electric SUV for the Indian and global markets. The new model will be based on the 27PL platform, another underpinning of Toyota’s 40PL architecture. The new model will be positioned in the same segment as the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona EV.
Maruti Suzuki’s mid-size SUV, codenamed YFG, will hit the market before the end of the year, possibly around the Diwali holiday season in India. The new model is co-developed by Toyota-Suzuki JV and will have two different versions including a Toyota version codenamed D22 and a Maruti Suzuki version, codenamed YFG. YFG’s rivals will be Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Toyota Corolla Cross…
The new SUV will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi plant. Maruti Suzuki YFG mid-size SUV will be based on Toyota’s low-cost DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform. This platform is currently used for many Toyota and Daihatsu products including the Toyota Raize, Daihatsu Rocky and the new Toyota Avanza.
The new Maruti Suzuki YFG will share styling cues from Toyota SUVs in the global market including the Toyota Corolla Cross. However, the front design is expected to bear similarities to the Suzuki A-Cross and the re-manufactured Toyota RAV4 in European markets. The latest spy shots show the upcoming mid-size SUV sporting a split-headlight setup with A-Cross-inspired LED DRLs placed at the top. The front grille design will also share similarities with the new Baleno and the upcoming Ertiga facelift. The SUV will have square wheel arches and an expected ground clearance of more than 200mm. The YFG uses large chunky 17-inch wheels.
Interior details of Maruti Suzuki YFG have not been revealed yet. However, the leaked photos show that the cabin layout of this model may have similarities with the Toyota Corolla Cross. Most likely there will be an independent touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity, automatic climate control, a multifunction steering wheel, a digital instrument panel and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. The SUV can also get ADAS features like adaptive cruise control, lane assist, blind spot monitoring and a collision warning system.
The upcoming Maruti Suzuki YFG mid-size SUV will be powered by Toyota’s ‘Strong Hybrid’ petrol engine, similar to that offered on the Camry sedan. The engine will work in conjunction with a small electric motor, allowing the SUV to run on electric power only for short distances. This will give the car more fuel economy than the competition. Not only the hybrid powertrain, the Maruti Suzuki YFG can also get the 1.5L K15B petrol engine with SHVS mild hybrid technology. Transmission options can include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
