Qualcomm has just announced its new mid-range Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 chipset. The previous Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 also appeared on a small number of devices, but hopefully things will change with the new chip.
Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 promises significant improvements in both performance and battery saving. The main Kryo CPU core is clocked at 2.91GHz and the entire 1+3+4 CPU package delivers a performance boost of more than 50% over Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.
On the other hand, the unnamed Adreno GPU boasts a 2x increase in performance and up to 13% battery savings compared to the previous generation. The good news is that devices running the new chipset are coming soon this month and we won’t have to wait long to test their real performance.
Other features of the chip include rendering the foreground gaming scenes in high resolution and leaving the background in low resolution to save energy and resources. IPS is also enhanced, it is upgraded to Triple IPS 18-bit to improve low-light photography by stacking 30 images into one. The 200MP sensor also supports HDR video recording with 3x exposure from 2 cameras at the same time.
Qualcomm’s AI engine provides 2x improved performance and 40% battery per watt savings. Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 uses the Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF System with download speeds of up to 4.4Gbps. More importantly, however, phones running on the 7 series will eventually be able to use the 4G/5G Dual-Sim Dual Active (DSDA) feature.
