On the evening of May 27, billionaire Elon Musk suddenly announced that SpaceX would soon accept payments in Dogecoin. This move has sent the price of the popular meme coin skyrocketing again.
SpaceX will accept Dogecoin payments
Elon Musk announced on Twitter that his company, SpaceX, will accept payment for goods in Dogecoin (DOGE).
It is possible to buy Tesla goods with Doge, soon SpaceX goods too.
The billionaire’s tweet helped the DOGE value skyrocket by about 15% in just 7 minutes. Specifically, the price of this memecoin has increased from $0.078 to $0.085.
There is nothing too surprising about this move of the SpaceX CEO because he has repeatedly supported Dogecoin. However, with this announcement, Musk did not specify when the payment option will be available to the public.
A Twitter account named @Occupmars42059 questioned Elon Musk if SpaceX would allow customers to pay for Starlink’s Internet subscriptions with Dogecoin. Responding to the above question, Musk said maybe one day in the future his company will do that.
In May 2021, SpaceX announced to organize a mission on the moon called “Mission DOGE-1 to the Moon”. Musk noted that “Dogecoin will become the first cryptocurrency in the space.” This event will be held in 1Q2022 and sponsored entirely by DOGE by Geometric Energy Corporation. However, up to now, this DOGE-1 mission is still “sitting motionless”.
Elon Musk and mentions of Dogecoin
In the past, Musk’s electric car giant Tesla has accepted DOGE for payments for some items. However, Tesla is still not able to accept DOGE to buy its electric cars like it did with Bitcoin (BTC).
Elon Musk wrote on his personal page on January 14, 2021:
Tesla products can be purchased with Dogecoin.
This tweet of the Tesla CEO quickly reached the top of trending on the social networking platform Twitter. Elon Musk really has a great influence on the crypto market, when in just a short sentence, the value of DOGE has sometimes increased sharply by 26%.
Not stopping there, at the end of March 2021, information that Tesla accepts direct payment of Bitcoin (BTC) for electric vehicle products flooded all the newspapers. But then, the billionaire quickly changed his mind in May, officially parting with BTC after less than 2 months. The reason given is that BTC mining wastes too much fossil energy, which goes against Tesla’s alternative energy philosophy. Even so, Musk has vowed to re-accept BTC once the rate of green energy adoption in mining reaches above the 50% threshold.
There have been rumors that after the successful takeover of Twitter, Musk will move towards accepting DOGE payments for some of the platform’s services.
Dogecoin is currently ranked 10th on the list of market capitalization of cryptocurrencies.
Dogecoin price today (May 28) is $0.082947 with a 24-hour trading volume of $1,312,503,403. The market cap is 10,982,752,446 USD.
