(CHK) Used to be the “king” of the B-segment SUV segment in Vietnam 2 years ago, but now this Hyundai model will have to accept the fate of stopping selling.

Recently, TC Motor said it will suspend production and distribution of Hyundai Kona cars because of a shortage of parts supply. Accordingly, this B-size SUV will have to stop selling from June 2022. It is known that this is the main reason why Hyundai Kona has to stop selling, but not because big rivals like Kia Seltos or Toyota Corolla Cross are “far behind” in terms of sales.

Launched in 2018, Hyundai Kona once caused a “storm” in the B-segment SUV segment and then monopolized the throne of this segment in Vietnam in 2020 with sales reaching 7,863 vehicles.

However, in 2021, with the appearance of Kia Seltos and Toyota Corolla Cross, Hyundai Kona becomes “weak” and gradually loses its No. 1 position in the segment to rivals. Although the new upgrade of Hyundai Kona was launched globally in early 2021, there is still no information on whether this version will launch in the Vietnamese market.

Entering this year, Hyundai Kona experienced even more dismal sales when only 31 units were sold in May. If accumulated in the first 5 months of the year, Hyundai Kona only sold 1,265 vehicles, down 29% over the same period. period 2021.

Before that, in February, many information was rumored about the death of Hyundai Kona in Vietnam. And replacing this model is the all-new Hyundai Creta model. Currently, Hyundai Creta seems to be “performing” quite well when it has achieved sales of 935 vehicles in May and total sales after only 2 months has reached 2,043 vehicles.

The Hyundai Kona is not the only model of the Korean automaker affected by the shortage of parts. Other models such as Hyundai Tucson or Hyundai Santa Fe are also often in short supply because factories have supply chain problems and cannot meet market demand.
