Jeff Garzik is known as the co-founder of Bloq, Spacechain and Vesper Finance. Not only that, he is also considered one of the people who contributed the most to the development of Bitcoin Core.
Regarding the new project, Garzik said NextCypher allowed him to return to his passion for science fiction, the field that led him to crypto in the first place. Garzik revealed that in his opinion, the roots of Web3 can be found in the pages of books of the Cyberpunk genre. This category includes popular titles like William Gibson’s Neuromancer, Neal Stephenson’s Snowcrash, and role-playing games like “Shadowrun” and “Cyberpunk.”
To kick off the project, Garzik invested $1 million of his own money to fund NextCypher, which plans to launch the first television project, Deathlands (based on the novel by Jack Adrian, produced by Altman and Vitale. production) and Looking Glass, a groundbreaking idea from Garzik in the past, is expected to be released in 2023.
In addition, Garzik is also looking to leverage Web3 technologies such as NFT to link to digital content, providing proof of ownership for works produced by NextCypher. He affirmed that NFT will be the gateway to a Hollywood-class NextCypher experience.
“We’ve tried to think of all the fun, amazing, engaging ways fans want to experience going from *conception* at the concept stage, to post-production and streaming on YouTube. Amazon or Netflix.”
Finally, Garzik shared that NextCypher’s development team is still figuring out which blockchain NFTs will be minted on, but noted the direction is to avoid the high fees currently associated with Ethereum.
“We are currently looking for the best home for that. So the default answer is a sidechain connected to Ethereum, like Polygon or Avalanche. We are still negotiating between projects to see where we will choose to *land.”
However, Jeff Garzik’s case for turning in a new direction is not so new when we refer to the current career path from Bitcoin Core core developers. As of late 2021, developer John Newbery and maintainer Samuel Dobson have left Bitcoin Core for a number of personal reasons. Recently, Peter Wuille – another maintainer also narrowed his scope of activities for the project.
