With Earhart’s death in 1937, female aviators became less prominent but continued to contribute greatly to aviation, especially as a co-pilot during World War II.

In 1784, Elisabeth Thible became the first woman to take to the skies, as a passenger in a hot air balloon. More than a century later, in 1909, women once again contributed to the development of world aviation, this time in a heavy aircraft.

Another French woman, Elise Deroche (1889-1919), who called herself a baron although the legitimacy of the title is questionable, became the world’s first licensed female pilot in in 1910.

Over the next few years, women in Germany, Italy, and the United States were licensed to fly, many of them trying to prove that women had the same flying abilities as men unequivocally.

There were a number of other notable female aviators in the 1910s and 1920s, including Harriet Quimby (1884-1912; first woman to fly across the English Channel), Ruth Law (who set a non-stop distance record for the English Channel). both men and women), and Katherine Stinson.

The most famous, of course, is Amelia Earhart. During World War II, the Soviet Union sent female pilots into combat, mostly bombers, to attack German positions in Crimea.

Overall, this resistance stems from a number of fundamental causes. Some people believe that women are too weak or too slow to safely fly planes at high altitudes.

Although the role of women in the military remained more limited than that of men, women began to receive larger and more technical roles during World War II and in the years that followed. In particular, women were allowed to join the military and fly in support roles for the Allies.

For example, by flying planes from factories to air bases and to Europe, female pilots greatly assist the military in combat missions.

At this point, however, the role of women in military aviation has been stagnant for years in the US as the administration, military, and government continue to be reluctant to put women at risk. .

In fact, it wasn’t until after the Persian Gulf War in the early 1990s that American women were allowed to fly fighters in potentially hostile situations.
