After Weibo and Baidu, China’s most popular messaging app WeChat blocks searches for keywords about cryptocurrency exchanges.
On October 13, many WeChat users in China discovered that the app would return “No Results” when trying to search for the two keywords “Binance” and “Huobi”, both in Chinese and English. . However, previously posted cryptocurrency content is still accessible.
This is considered the latest move to censor information by Chinese social networks targeting the cryptocurrency sector after the ban on September 24. China’s Internet Firewall has blocked crypto metrics websites such as CoinMarketCap, CoinGecko, and TradingView. In June, social network Weibo and search engine Baidu also blocked keywords related to Binance, Huobi and OKEx – three exchanges that are being used by many Chinese.
Also on October 13, Binance announced that it would delist cryptocurrency-to-yuan (CNY) trading pairs on Binance P2P by the end of 2021, as well as limiting the functionality of Chinese user accounts. The country is “only allowed to withdraw money”.
Huobi previously announced that it would gradually delete Chinese user accounts from now until December 31, 2021, and acknowledged that it would have to abandon this market and move abroad.
