Xiaomi launched the Surge S1 custom processor in 2017. However, since then, the Chinese smartphone maker has been using Qualcomm chips. But today things are likely to change, when Xiaomi reveals it will launch a new custom processor chip during the March 29 event.
Xiaomi has posted an article on its Weibo page, mentioning a chip developed by itself by Xiaomi’s engineering team. The Chinese smartphone maker has also confirmed that it will launch the chip during the Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra launch events. However, that does not mean that these two high-end smartphones will be equipped with Xiaomi’s custom chip.
So far, the only custom chip that Xiaomi has developed on its own, has been launched is the Surge S1. So Xiaomi’s new custom chip could also be a Surge chip. But what to expect from Xiaomi’s next chip?
The Surge S1 is a complete mobile processor, featured in the low-cost Mi 5C smartphone, launched in 2017. Hence, Xiaomi’s new custom processor chip is likely to remain a chip as well. less ambitious handling, equipped for low-cost or mid-range smartphones.
Developing a mobile microprocessor is a complex undertaking that takes a lot of time and effort. Even giant Huawei takes many years and countless versions to release high-end processor chips. Therefore, Xiaomi may not risk by developing chips that can replace Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon line of chips.
We’ll wait and see what Xiaomi has to offer at this March 29 event.
